Marcelo or Montenegro? Portuguese people trust the President more

The latest survey conducted by Pitagórica for TVI/CNN, JN, and TSF has revealed that the Portuguese public places greater trust in the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, than in the Prime Minister, Luís Montenegro. This gap in trust levels, which existed in previous surveys, has widened significantly within the past month, now standing at 17 percentage points. Currently, 38% of respondents express confidence in Marcelo, compared to 21% for Montenegro.

Additionally, a significant portion of the population, 77%, believes that Marcelo should take a more demanding stance towards the Government.

In the event of a minority government following elections, 71% of Portuguese citizens feel that the President of the Republic should compel political parties to negotiate instead of simply appointing a minority executive. Only 23% of those surveyed find the latter scenario acceptable.

Furthermore, the poll indicates negative ratings for both the Secretary-General of the Socialist Party (PS), Pedro Nuno Santos, and the leader of Chega, André Ventura. Santos receives 66% negative evaluations, while Ventura’s negative rating stands at 80%.

The survey was conducted between March 24 and March 29, 2025, subsequently to the fall of the Government. It involved 1,000 telephone interviews out of 1,626 contact attempts, with a margin of error of 3.16% and a confidence level of 95.5%.
