Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa spoke at the Citadel of Cascais, alongside Carlos Carreiras, during the inauguration of an inclusive café—an initiative by a hotel chain in partnership with an organization focused on socio-professional training for adults with intellectual and developmental difficulties.
The head of state remarked that Carlos Carreiras, who has led the municipal executive of Cascais since 2011 and is now ineligible for re-election due to term limits, “was a great mayor” and “still is a great mayor.”
“I witnessed the beginning, in the true sense of the word, of the civic, political activity of the mayor and, later, of the municipal activity. There is no doubt that what he has done throughout his life, which I have been able to witness, was truly exceptional,” he stated.
The President of the Republic emphasized the importance of “valuing everyone’s talents” together: “This is called sharing, communion, solidarity, fraternity.”
“And the mayor did this during his municipal terms. He fostered growth, created wealth, developed tourism, did all of this but always with a social concern, not only creatively but socially,” he added.
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa highlighted the inclusive café project inaugurated today, a partnership between the Pestana Group and the non-governmental organization Semear, as “a good example, a magnificent example” to follow.
“This is what entrepreneurs and companies should do,” he urged.
“Everyone benefits when there are examples like this and many others. This should be the practice of companies,” he reinforced.
The head of state praised the work of the organization Semear, stating that “important are especially those who do small things that produce great effects, and not those who have great appearances and produce very little effect.”
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, who lives “across the street,” promised to visit and even offered to be “another” working on this project, “from noon on March 9” next year, after stepping down as President of the Republic.
