Marcelo says that Trump has been acting as a “Soviet asset” of Russia

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa made an unexpected appearance today at the PSD Summer University event, aimed at training young professionals, which runs until Sunday in Castelo de Vide (Portalegre). His attendance was a surprise, as he was initially scheduled to address the event through a video link.

In a panel named “The President’s Responses,” the head of state delivered an opening address concerning international affairs. He highlighted Donald Trump as an exemplar of a new, more emotionally-charged political leadership style that seeks direct engagement with citizens, bypassing traditional media intermediaries, in a world where the power dynamics have shifted.

“With something unique and complex: the top leader of the world’s foremost superpower is, objectively, a Soviet or Russian asset. He operates as an asset,” he stated.

The President emphasized that this is not an alliance built on friendship or economic, ideological, or doctrinal complicity.

“I am stating that, objectively, the new American leadership has strategically benefited the Russian Federation,” he remarked, referencing the actions of the US president concerning the Ukrainian conflict.

“In other words, they have shifted from being allies on one side to referees of the challenge,” he continued, noting that this referee seeks to negotiate solely with one of the parties, excluding both Ukraine and Europe, who found themselves having to impose their presence in recent discussions.
