Marcelo sends condolences after the death of 4 young Portuguese in France

The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, expressed his condolences on Saturday to the families of the four young Portuguese individuals who died in an accident in France.

“President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa extends his heartfelt condolences to the families of the four young Portuguese, residents in Fribourg, Switzerland, victims of a tragic traffic accident in France,” stated a note from the Presidency.

“The President of the Republic is following the situation, in contact with the State Secretariat for Portuguese Communities,” it concludes.

According to French authorities cited by the Agence France-Presse (AFP), the young individuals died after the car they were in left the road and crashed into something unspecified. The vehicle caught fire.

The victims are two boys, aged 16 and 18, and two girls, both aged 18, according to the deputy public prosecutor of the French commune of Bourg-en-Bresse, Antoine Celle, in statements to AFP.

Antoine Celle explained that the youths, two couples, “were of Portuguese nationality and residing in Switzerland” and were traveling towards Paris.

Initial findings “do not suggest they had consumed drugs or alcohol,” added the deputy public prosecutor, noting that autopsies have been ordered. The accident occurred at approximately 22:30 local time (21:30 in Lisbon) on Friday.
