A year ago, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa expressed, during a visit to the Hospital de Santa Maria in Lisbon, the need for a swift government response regarding the operation of emergency services.
“I had very high expectations. Given the severity of the problems and the mention of an emergency plan, each of us hopes for the quickest possible response,” the President emphasized, noting that he had heard Minister Ana Paula Martins express a hope that the situation experienced in 2024 would not repeat in 2025.
In a recent statement to the Público newspaper, Marcelo declared that he “expects to assess the matter potentially by the end of summer,” as the issue remains unresolved 12 months later, with some obstetric and pediatric emergency services still periodically closed, particularly on weekends.
