Marcelo will forgo the President’s pension and wants to return to teaching.

President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa has decided to forgo his presidential pension after his term concludes in March 2026. The head of state will retain only his pension as a professor, despite the law allowing him to collect both pensions.

Before assuming office as President of the Republic in 2016, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa calculated his professional pension, which amounts to five thousand euros net—one thousand euros more than the pension to which an ex-President is entitled.

Although the regulation regarding the remuneration of the President allows for the accumulation of pensions with retirement or survivor’s pensions, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa has chosen not to take advantage of this provision.

A source from the Presidency of the Republic has been contacted for confirmation of this information, with a response still pending.

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa also plans to teach Portuguese History, the Constitution, international affairs, and education for at least two years. He aims to start in schools in the interior regions before moving to the larger cities.

Further, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa intends to take on the role of a museum curator, having previously been associated with the National Museum of Ancient Art, the Arpad Szenes-Vieira da Silva Museum, and the Casa de Bragança Foundation.
