Marcelo will undergo surgery: “He is fine” and has “incarcerated hernia”

The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, is scheduled to undergo surgery this Monday at the Hospital de São João in Porto after being diagnosed with a strangulated hernia.

“The President of the Republic is doing well,” explained Maria João Baptista, president of the Board of Directors of the Local Health Unit of São João. After being hospitalized, Marcelo underwent tests that “confirmed the diagnosis of a strangulated hernia.”

“At the moment, the President is heading to the operating room. He will stay with us tonight, and it is expected that he will remain here in the coming days,” stated the official.

Journalists were further informed that the procedure carries a “relatively low risk, both surgical and anesthetic,” suggesting that complications are unlikely.

Maria João Baptista also noted that Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa’s medical history, including “a previous surgery for a hernia similar to this situation,” contributed to the immediate decision to operate.

She remarked that the earlier the intervention is performed, “the lower the risk and fewer complications there will be.”
