Marcelo’s trip to Cape Verde and São Tomé approved unanimously

The resolution project presented by the President of the Assembly of the Republic, José Pedro Aguiar-Branco, was unanimously approved.

In a letter to the Assembly of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa announced his plans to visit the city of Praia from July 4 to 6 and São Tomé from July 11 to 13.

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa stated he would participate in the celebrations of the 50th anniversaries of independence of these African nations, at the invitation of the presidents of Cape Verde, José Maria Neves, and São Tomé and Príncipe, Carlos Vila Nova.

Cape Verde gained independence from Portugal on July 5, 1975, and São Tomé and Príncipe on July 12, 1975, after five centuries of Portuguese colonial rule.

This week, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa took part in the 50th independence anniversary celebrations in Mozambique, invited by Mozambican President Daniel Chapo.

Two years ago, the President expressed his willingness to attend the independence celebrations of Portuguese-speaking countries, former colonies of Portugal, if invited.

At that time, he also expressed a desire to see the heads of state of these countries celebrate the 50th anniversary of April 25, 1974, in Portugal, which was later confirmed.

In 2023, he attended the celebration of the 50th anniversary of Guinea-Bissau’s independence in Bissau, alongside the then Prime Minister António Costa, at the invitation of Guinean President Umaro Sissoco Embaló.

The Assembly of the Republic’s assent to the head of state’s trips is a constitutional formality, as the President cannot leave national territory without parliament’s authorization.
