Mariana Leitão, speaking this morning during a street event near the Metro station at Campo Grande in Lisbon, stated that the party does not oppose the creation of a support fund for the victims, referring to the measures presented on Monday by the Lisbon City Council in response to the Glória tram accident.
“People must be supported, families must be supported. It is a tragedy that has affected us all, and therefore, all measures aimed at assisting the victims are measures that must be executed, and we do not oppose the creation of this fund,” she said.
The IL leader reiterated that this is a time for solidarity with the victims and families and for determining the causes of the accident.
“I understand that we are in municipal elections, and we repudiate any form of political opportunism. This is a time for solidarity with the families, with the victims, with those who are injured, and to wait for the conclusions of the ongoing investigation to clarify the true causes of the accident to prevent such situations in the future,” she concluded.
The Lisbon City Council approved on Monday proposals from the PSD/CDS-PP leadership, PS, and PCP regarding measures in response to the Glória tram accident, ranging from support for the victims to the creation of a transparency portal.
The proposals were approved “almost unanimously or unanimously in many cases” at the extraordinary council meeting, indicated the Deputy Mayor, Filipe Anacoreta Correia (CDS-PP), noting that there was an effort to consolidate the three documents into one, but it was not possible, leading the executive to vote on each one separately.
The Glória tram, managed by Carris, derailed on Wednesday afternoon in an accident that resulted in 16 deaths and two dozen injuries, among Portuguese and foreigners of various nationalities.
