Mariana Leitão says that the state of alert due to fires “comes late”

“When we have the country in the situation it has been in for over a week, it seems late,” stated Mariana Leitão to journalists during the presentation of the local election candidates in Mafra, including Diogo Matias who is running for the presidency of the city council.

The leader of IL warned that “the problem is extensive and if nothing is done to resolve it, it will continue year after year,” urging the Government to take measures to prevent recurring issues.

“Last year, we had a similar situation, and the most we saw was the creation of a committee in the Assembly of the Republic still studying the issue,” she criticized.

For IL, “we don’t need more studies; we need concrete action with tangible results to ensure the safeguarding of people, their resources, and that firefighters have the necessary conditions to tackle fires quickly, in a coordinated and organized manner.”

The liberal leader pointed out that “problems remain unaddressed, starting with a lack of planning, coordination, and prevention.”

“There are several operational issues with central command and the teams on the ground. Orders cannot be centralized by people unaware of the terrain and the conditions there,” she exemplified.

According to IL, there is a need for “effective planning” to determine the human and mobile resources, both terrestrial and aerial, necessary to “address the problems.”

Portugal will enter a state of alert from Sunday to Thursday due to the high risk of fire in the coming days, announced the Minister of Internal Administration today.
