Mário Amorim Lopes calls for “expedited process” in IL. Will he be a candidate?

In remarks at the Assembly of the Republic, Mário Amorim Lopes, labeled as a potential candidate to succeed Rui Rocha as leader of IL, stated that today’s focus should be on the country’s issues, not the party’s internal matters, while noting “excellent options” exist for the presidency.

Declining to discuss any candidacy, the deputy, also part of Rui Rocha’s leadership, emphasized the need for a swift leadership selection process so that the party can concentrate on the upcoming municipal elections, deemed a critical event.

“We need to connect with the public, listen to their concerns, and be able to address them. We must restore trust and hope in Portugal’s potential,” he stated.

Alongside former IL leader Carlos Guimarães Pinto, before attending the opening of the XVII Legislature, Amorim Lopes addressed national issues, highlighting electoral results that reflect the public’s justified discontent.

“They see a stagnating nation not meeting their rightful expectations. Our mission is to rebuild confidence,” he remarked.

Regarding Mariana Leitão’s reappointment as IL’s parliamentary leader, Amorim Lopes praised her “excellent work” in the previous term and dismissed suggestions that her role might preclude a leadership bid.

“Mariana has a lot of energy, which is not an issue. Many have this energy, including her,” he noted, deflecting queries about his own energies towards internal party matters.

Carlos Guimarães Pinto also addressed reporters, insisting the focus should remain on the nation’s issues, dismissing suggestions that Rui Rocha’s resignation would impact the party’s legislative operations.

“We have clear priorities for our term, and numerous legislative proposals aligned with our agenda. Our duty to voters is to fulfill campaign commitments,” he emphasized.

When asked if he intends to run for leadership, Guimarães Pinto refrained from commenting but reiterated, “any party member can become a leadership candidate.”

On whether Mário Amorim Lopes possesses leadership qualities, Guimarães Pinto highlighted IL’s strength in having many potential leaders, acknowledging the advantage of being a parliamentary member for leadership candidates.

“Being in parliament offers scrutiny and media exposure benefits, though it’s not an absolute necessity,” he added.
