The celebrations of the centenary of the birth of the writer and painter Mário Cesariny will take place from August and for a year, with the realization of several exhibitions, meetings, conversations, shows, concerts and editions, it was announced today.
The presentation of the program to mark the centenary of the poet, painter and one of the “great masters of Portuguese surrealism”, who was born on August 9, 1923, in Lisbon, and died on November 26, 2006, took place at the Cupertino de Miranda Foundation (FCM), in Vila Nova de Famalicão, Braga district, holder of his personal, artistic and documentary collection.
“It will be a year of celebration of a great man, the poet of freedom, an unsubmissive person who inspires us all. It will be an opportunity to get to know better the richness and depth of his work”, underlined the president of FCM, Pedro Álvares Ribeiro.
The artistic director, Marlene Oliveira, who is also curator of the exhibition “Mário Cesariny: In all the streets I meet you”, which marks the beginning of the celebrations and which will be open between August 5 and September 8, 2024, recalled that the FCP “is the home” of the poet and painter.
The artist and poet provided the Cupertino de Miranda Foundation with the incorporation, by purchase, donation and legacy of a large part of his library and artistic and documentary collection.
The celebrations of the centenary of the birth of Mário Cesariny extend to other cities in the country and also abroad, namely to France.
Between October 3 and February 18, 2024, the Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology (MAAT) in Lisbon hosts the exhibition “The Surrealist Castle”.
The Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso Municipal Museum in Amarante, Porto district, will host an exhibition by the artist from March to June 2024, while between June and September next year it will be the turn of the Coimbra Contemporary Art Center.
The meetings and conversations included in the celebrations of the centenary of Cesariny’s birth kick off on August 9, with an interview with Perfecto E. Cuadrado, coordinator of the Portuguese Surrealism Center, at Antena 2 and with a poetry session by Isaque Ferreira at the Cupertino Miranda Foundation. In November there will also be, at FCP, “conversations around Mário Cesariny”, with professors António Cândido Franco and Bernardo Pinto de Almeida.
From November 23 to 26, another edition of “Encontros” takes place, an initiative that takes place annually at FCP, with the aim of “paying homage to one of the main representatives of Portuguese and international surrealism, considered one of the great names of national culture”.
According to the Foundation, the program is vast, with plastic expression workshops, book launches, poetry recitations, poetry in the street, concerts and shows.
Also during these three days, the Carmina 4 “Mário Cesariny – The passion of the image” is scheduled, with the presentation of films and the holding of several round tables with guests linked to culture.
As for the editions in 2023 and 2024, anthologies and photographs of the artist will be launched, with emphasis on the presentation, on November 19, at the Théâtre de La Ville Paris, in France, of the anthology of poetry translated into French, bilingual, with translation by Bernardo Haumonte and preface by Emília de Almeida.
Courses and various other activities, as well as the launch of a CTT stamp commemorating the centenary of Mário Cesariny, inserted in the collection “Vultos da História e da Cultura”, are other scheduled initiatives.
