Mário Laginha opens the 15th XJazz in Aldeia das Dez in Oliveira do Hospital

The performance by the Portuguese pianist is set to begin at 22:00 and is one of three announced by the Network of Schist Villages and Jazz ao Centro Club for the 15th XJazz–Meetings of Jazz in the Schist Villages.

Between April and August, XJazz will offer a series of performances described by the organizing entities as “exceptional moments in locations characterized by their landscape, heritage, and authenticity.”

The first scheduled concert features Mário Laginha, a musician with a four-decade-long career in jazz who also explores Brazilian and African sounds, as well as pop and classical genres.

XJazz continues on May 10 with a performance by the duo Cláudia Franco and Filipe Duarte in Figueira, located in the municipality of Proença-a-Nova, Castelo Branco district.

The intimate show proposed for the patio of Casa Ti’Augusta combines jazz, fado, and Portuguese songs with new arrangements.

In Fajão, a village in the municipality of Pampilhosa da Serra in the Coimbra district, XJazz will feature the percussion and gamelan collective Ensemble Nist-Nah.

The performance, scheduled for June 21, will bring Southeast Asian sounds to Praça da Cadeira, presented in a contemporary and experimental style by the project led by Australian percussionist Will Guthrie, currently based in Nantes, France.

The remaining concerts are planned for July and August, with artists to be announced soon.

XJazz is an initiative that began in 2012, “combining creative dimensions with the endogenous resources of the territory–heritage, tradition, gastronomy, nature, natural and cultural landscape–highlighting places and communities.”
