A letter addressed to BE militants, with access obtained by Lusa, reveals that Mariana Mortágua, along with the party’s leadership, is closely following current events in Portugal. She highlights that other party officials, like the former parliamentary leader Fabian Figueiredo, have ensured the party’s expression during her absence.
“With the upcoming local election campaign, this representation will be strengthened. I also thank Marisa Matias, who will replace me in campaign initiatives until my return,” the letter states.
The national coordinator of BE believes that given “the suffering of the Palestinian people and the complicity of governments refusing to impose sanctions on Israel,” her role as BE leader is fulfilled by participating in the flotilla heading to Gaza.
In the Assembly of the Republic, as reported on Monday, Mariana Mortágua will be temporarily replaced by party official Andreia Galvão.
The BE leader notes that when she agreed to join the humanitarian mission, she expected it to conclude sooner. However, “after consideration and given the unpredictability of navigation conditions,” she requested a temporary parliamentary replacement to ensure the party’s representation in plenary debates.
Andreia Galvão serves as a member of BE’s Political Commission and National Board.
An actress, producer, and cultural agent, Galvão was born in Lisbon in 2000.
She holds a degree in Communication Sciences from the Universidade Nova de Lisboa and a Master’s in Theater from the Escola Superior de Teatro e Cinema.
The party official was the third candidate on BE’s list for the Lisbon constituency in the May legislative elections.
An official party source informed Lusa that Fabian Figueiredo, second on the list, will not assume the mandate due to “professional impediments.”
