Maritime agitation and wind: Funchal’s Captaincy issues warnings in Madeira

The Portuguese Institute of Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) has issued forecasts concerning weather conditions, including strong winds ranging from 62 to 74 kilometers per hour and significant waves reaching up to 7.5 meters along the northern coast and 5.5 meters along the southern coast.

In response, the regional maritime authority has strengthened warnings to the maritime community and the general public to take necessary precautions both during preparation to go to sea and when at sea or in coastal areas.

Recommendations from the maritime authority include securing and monitoring moored and anchored vessels, avoiding walks along the sea or in areas exposed to strong waves, and refraining from recreational fishing.

Meanwhile, more than half of the flights scheduled to depart from Madeira Island today by midday have been canceled due to weather conditions, with only the 06:00 flight to Shannon, Ireland, having departed.

According to data available on Madeira Airport’s website, by 07:45, 11 departures and 11 arrivals had already been canceled.

The information on the website indicates that adverse weather conditions could affect flight operations (departures and arrivals) until Saturday.

Passengers are advised to always confirm the status of their flights before heading to the airport.
