
Luís Marques Mendes emphasized on social network X that “the number of victims caused by the accident (…) is a true human tragedy”.
“The city of Lisbon is in mourning. To the families affected by this tragedy, I send my deepest condolences and my embrace of solidarity,” he stated.
Meanwhile, Henrique Gouveia e Melo expressed “deep grief and sincere condolences to the families and friends of the victims of the tragic accident that occurred today in Lisbon,” also offering “support to all the operatives on the ground in rescue and extraction operations.”
“Finally, I hope a thorough and swift investigation is conducted to determine all consequences so that similar accidents do not happen again,” he mentioned in a statement on Facebook.
António José Seguro also expressed “deep sorrow” over the “tragic accident,” extending heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and wishing a quick recovery to all the injured.
“I reiterate the need for a thorough investigation into the causes of this tragedy so that similar situations do not recur,” stressed the presidential candidate.
The Glória funicular in Lisbon derailed this Wednesday at 18:04 on Calçada da Glória.
The INEM reported that the accident resulted in 15 deaths and 18 injuries, of which five are in serious condition and 13 have minor injuries.
The government declared a day of national mourning for this Thursday.
The Glória funicular, managed by Carris, connects Restauradores to Jardim de São Pedro de Alcântara in Bairro Alto over a stretch of about 265 meters and is highly popular with tourists.
