Marques Mendes warns against the “germ of instability” in the Parliament.

The presentation of the book “Luís Marques Mendes — uma vida política” by journalist Luís Rosa saw the attendance of PSD President and Prime Minister Luís Montenegro, as well as CDS-PP President Nuno Melo. These are the two parties supporting the candidate in his race to Belém, alongside several ministers and former social-democratic leaders.

The former PSD President and candidate for Belém in the January 18 elections argued that the next President of the Republic must first avoid “adding instability to the instability that comes from abroad” and must also know how to handle the domestic situation, which he described as unusual.

“Firstly, on a positive note. A situation where Portugal is well-regarded internationally. Prestigious,” he stated, emphasizing Portugal’s distinction by “The Economist” magazine.

However, at the same time, with “a highly divided, highly fragmented parliament that harbors within it the germ, the risk, the threat of instability.”

“Portugal cannot, in this regard, take steps backward (…) Stability is not something of the past. It is of the past, it is of the present, and it is of the future. Without stability, there is no ambition,” he said, highlighting these as the two main goals of his candidacy.
