Marta Massada has become the first woman elected as president of the Porto Municipal Assembly.
Gonçalo Mayan Gonçalves, from the PSD/CDS-PP/IL coalition, was elected as the first secretary with 26 votes in favor, one blank vote, and 18 votes going to Maria da Graça Vaz from the PS’s list.
The second secretary will be Teresa Maria Vilas Boas Figueiredo (PSD/CDS-PP/IL), elected with 28 votes in favor, one blank vote, and 16 votes for Carolina Macedo dos Santos (PS).
Only the PSD/CDS-PP/IL coalition and the PS presented candidates for these three positions.
Susana Constante Pereira, the sole representative from the Left Bloc, was absent from the voting due to professional commitments.
Marta Massada, an orthopedic surgeon, is a spokesperson for the independent group in Porto that supported Pedro Duarte’s candidacy.
Massada expressed a “sense of responsibility” in assuming her new role.
The newly elected president of the Porto Municipal Assembly pledged two commitments: to “serve” her city and to “honor the role” as the first woman to lead the assembly.
The Porto Municipal Assembly consists of 49 elected members, including the presidents of seven parish councils (Pedro Duarte’s candidacy did not win the councils of Campanhã and the Historic Center of Porto, which are led by the PS).
