The “King of Samba” returns to Portuguese stages at the age of 87, promising a performance filled with joy, as he stated to Lusa from Brazil.
“I have prepared everything. A good setlist is essential, and I’m eager to travel; I already miss it there,” he said with a laugh.
The audience can expect an “upbeat show” and “some a cappella moments” within a performance that will include “some lesser-known songs” along with some of his greatest hits.
The singer-songwriter will also perform ‘A Rosinha dos Limões,’ a Portuguese fado by Artur Ribeiro, which the Brazilian artist has previously recorded.
Martinho da Vila is bringing his full band to Portugal, which he proudly describes as having “very talented musicians.”
The performer of ‘Devagar, Devagarinho’ expresses calm concerning Brazil’s political situation, especially after the former President Jair Bolsonaro, whom he has criticized, was sentenced to 27 years in prison.
“He was sentenced to 27 years; he will probably serve eight or ten at most, with good behavior,” he remarked, adding that in Brazil, the sentence was anticipated: “It was a sure thing.”
“It’s normal here. We are a bit different from you [Portuguese], who are very politically engaged. Here, we are only focused on music,” he commented.
The concerts in Portugal are scheduled for November 13 at the Coliseu do Porto, November 15 at Coliseu dos Recreios, in Lisbon, and November 16 at Convento São Francisco, in Coimbra, according to the promoter.
Martinho da Vila has released dozens of albums, the first in 1967 and the latest last year.
In ‘Violões e cavaquinhos,’ released in May 2024, Martinho da Vila revisits his own compositions and unveils four new tracks.
The album features contributions from L7NNON, Preta Gil, Alegria Ferreira, and Mart’nália.
