Maureen Fazendeiro and Manoel de Oliveira’s Films at the Toronto Festival

According to the festival organization, in a statement, ‘As Estações’ and ‘Magalhães’ will be part of the ‘Wavelengths’ section.

Maureen Fazendeiro’s feature film is described on the festival’s website as a “poetic and metamorphic” work, while ‘Magalhães’ is classified as a “decolonial epic.”

According to the production company O Som e a Fúria, in a statement, in ‘As Estações’, Maureen Fazendeiro invites the viewer “to travel through Alentejo, in a sensory and lyrical journey where archaeology, oral tradition, and landscapes loaded with mystery intersect in an engaging docufiction that delves into the layers of time and the memory of places.”

The film will have its world premiere on Monday in Locarno, and will continue in October, after Toronto, to the Yamagata International Documentary Film Festival in Japan.

‘Magalhães’, directed by Filipino filmmaker Lav Diaz, co-produced by Portuguese company Rosa Filmes, was shot in Portugal and Spain, having been confirmed this week for the New York Film Festival line-up. The film premiered at Cannes this year.

‘Magalhães’ stars Mexican actor Gael García Bernal as the Portuguese navigator Fernão de Magalhães (1480-1521), who embarked on the circumnavigation journey and died in the Philippines.

Meanwhile, ‘Aniki-Bobó’ will be part of the classics section of the 50th Toronto International Film Festival, alongside works such as ‘Days and Nights in the Forest’ by Satyajit Ray, ‘Jaws’ by Steven Spielberg, and ‘The Arch’ by T’ang Shushuen.

The Toronto festival takes place from September 4 to 14, and on Thursday, it announced the short film competition, which will feature ‘Arguments in Favor of Love’ by Gabriel Abrantes, and ‘Quietness’ by Gonçalo Almeida, as well as the Portuguese co-production ‘Fille de l’eau’ by Sandra Desmazières.
