More than 250 films will be screened between July 12 and 20, encompassing categories such as competition, retrospectives of renowned filmmakers’ recent works, emerging filmmakers, and film concerts, as stated by the festival in a press release.
While the selection phase for the competitive sections is ongoing, Curtas Vila do Conde has announced plans for retrospectives of American filmmaker Whit Stillman, known for comedies like “Metropolitan” (1990), “Barcelona” (1994), and “The Last Days of Disco” (1998), alongside Palestinian-Danish director Mahdi Fleifel, whose work “To a Land Unknown” (2024) premiered at the Cannes Film Festival.
From French director Maureen Fazendeiro, who resides in Portugal, Curtas Vila do Conde will host the national premiere of her latest short film, “Les Habitants,” as well as screenings of her earlier works “Black Sun” (2019) and “Motu Maeva” (2014), along with the feature film “Diários de Otsoga” (2021), co-directed with Miguel Gomes.
The “Last Film” section, centered on the latest short films by established filmmakers, will feature works like “O velho do Restelo” (2014) by Manoel de Oliveira, “A tremonha de cristal” (1993) by António Campos, and “Scenarios” (2024) by Jean-Luc Godard.
At Solar — Galeria de Arte Cinemática, the festival will present an exhibition by Iranian filmmaker Maryam Tafakory, showcasing “film, performance, and video projects with a documentary basis,” reflecting on “those neglected and erased from history.”
In the cine-concert segment, which combines cinema screenings with live music, notable participants this year include Americans Lee Ranaldo (formerly of Sonic Youth) and John Carroll Kirby, as well as French artist Felicia Atkinson.
This 33rd edition of Curtas Vila do Conde is expected to attract more than 20,000 attendees.
