Temperatures soared in mainland Portugal on Tuesday, with highs reaching 39ºC in the districts of Évora and Beja, and 37ºC in Santarém and Castelo Branco.
The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere predicts highs of 36ºC for Portalegre, 35ºC for Braga and Vila Real, 34ºC for Bragança, Viseu, Lisbon, and Setúbal, 32ºC for Guarda, Coimbra, and Faro, and 31ºC for Leiria. Only Porto and Aveiro have maximum temperatures below 30ºC, with 29ºC and 26ºC, respectively.
In response to this forecast, the IPMA has issued a yellow warning for ten districts (Bragança, Viseu, Évora, Guarda, Faro, Vila Real, Setúbal, Beja, Castelo Branco, and Portalegre) from 9:00 AM Tuesday until 6:00 PM Wednesday.
The institute also reports twenty municipalities across six districts are at maximum wildfire risk due to the rising temperatures. The risk of rural fires is expected to increase from Tuesday and remain elevated at least until the weekend in some districts.
The IPMA also predicts generally clear skies but with the presence of strong winds (up to 40km/h), especially in the highlands of the North and Center regions until mid-morning. The Greater Lisbon area is likely to be more affected by intense winds compared to Greater Porto, where winds are expected to be between 20 and 30km/h.
In the autonomous regions, the situation differs. Both archipelagos are expected to have cloudy skies, with rain showers anticipated in the Azorean islands. Maximum temperatures in Funchal are expected to reach 27ºC, 25ºC in Porto Santo, and 24ºC in Ponta Delgada.
