Mayor of Santarém regrets “significant damage” in Alcanede

A recent wildfire devastated more than 200 hectares, causing damage to property and resulting in the death of approximately 350 animals at a livestock farm. “It’s always a very sad moment for any region,” stated João Leite, highlighting that the Judicial Police have been investigating the incident since it began.

The local mayor praised the “crucial” work of Civil Protection and ground intervention forces, including the GNR and firefighters, who braved “very adverse” weather conditions, characterized by strong winds and low humidity.

“It was an exemplary mobilization, with more than 430 personnel on the ground,” he remarked.

João Leite also emphasized the role of the recently upgraded municipal airfield, which saw an investment of over 300,000 euros and facilitated the rapid deployment of aerial resources, including fixed-wing aircraft and a helicopter.

One residence was evacuated as a precautionary measure, but there are no reports of serious injuries, according to officials.

The local government is monitoring the situation through the parish council and municipal social services, remaining on alert to provide necessary support to affected residents.

When questioned about prevention efforts, the mayor affirmed that the municipality has been investing in land clearing and public awareness, advocating for severe punishment if criminal intent is confirmed in the fire’s origin.

“If it is confirmed to be arson, no matter the level of prevention in place, it’s challenging to combat. The law must be enforced firmly,” he concluded.
