“The suspension of my mandate will take place from today until May 18, 2025. During this period, the duties of the mayor of the Municipality of Vila de Rei will be carried out by the vice-president of the municipality, Paulo César Luís,” stated Ricardo Aires in a press release issued today.
This suspension is mandatory according to the current legislation, which explicitly mandates that “from the date of submission of candidacies until election day, candidates who are mayors or legally replace them cannot perform their respective duties.”
Portugal is set for early legislative elections on May 18, as scheduled by the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, on March 13. This decision followed two days after the parliament rejected a vote of confidence in the government, leading to the resignation of the PSD/CDS-PP government.
