“We are under a massive attack with absolutely incalculable losses, and the resources are clearly insufficient given the scale of what we are experiencing,” said Alexandre Favaios to Lusa.
A fire that began on the 2nd in Sirarelhos, which was resolved on Wednesday, reactivated on Saturday night and is now threatening the villages of Relva, Borbela, and Lordelo, near the city of Vila Real.
The official noted that the Vila Real district was under a red alert for heat this weekend, and it was, therefore, “expected that the resources would indeed be on the ground.”
The mayor expressed gratitude to everyone fighting the fire on the ground but emphasized that “it is clear the communities are being profoundly affected by this fire.”
“Therefore, we appeal to the Government to reinforce the resources, because without this reinforcement, clearly, this calamity will not end,” he stressed.
Alexandre Favaios suggested that “it would have been useful if the Government had asked for help from their European partners because, indeed, this is an utterly indescribable situation.”
