The vice-president of the Chamber of Angra do Heroísmo, Guido Teles, announced that the festival lineup aims to cater to the diverse tastes of the audience attending Sanjoaninas, with a specific emphasis on artists popular among younger people.
“Year after year, we’ve witnessed an increase in ticket demand for the Bailão stage area,” Teles remarked.
The venue accommodates approximately 5,500 individuals, and in 2024, nearly 5,000 weekly wristbands were sold, according to Teles.
For ten days, Angra do Heroísmo celebrates São João with parades, popular marches, music, gastronomy, bullfighting, sports, and exhibitions, among other activities.
Teles noted that the musical lineup strives to enhance the festival’s and the city’s visibility annually, featuring “artists who attract audiences of different ages,” yet the Sanjoaninas draw visitors due to the overall event, not solely for its musical lineup.
“The musical aspect complements everything else the festival has to offer. We’ve met people who came specifically for the concerts, particularly those from other islands, although sometimes it’s also people from the mainland,” he shared.
This year’s headline acts include the Brazilian Mc Daniel, distinguished in the funk genre, as the sole international artist.
“Mc Daniel has the potential to attract the Brazilian community in Portugal, who follow this artist closely,” stated Guido Teles.
The main stage at Sanjoaninas will also feature Portuguese artists such as Dillaz and Mizzy Milles, known for their influence in hip hop, singers Fernando Daniel, Dino d’Santiago, and Virgul, the band Excesso, popular at the end of the 1990s, and the tribute project Para Sempre Marco, honoring singer Marco Paulo.
The lineup also includes local bands like Doce Tributo and Quarto Crescente & Amigos, as well as both national and local DJs.
When asked about the budget, Teles stated that the municipality is maintaining “exactly the same investment as last year,” without disclosing specific figures.
“Our aim has always been to avoid increasing costs for the Bailão stage investment. It’s nine days, and it’s always a considerable investment,” he asserted.
In 2024, the investment remained similar to 2023, amounting to approximately 365,000 euros (excluding VAT), according to the municipality.
Ticket prices have remained unchanged for over a decade: 15 euros per day or 30 euros per week.
“We believe this is an offering with an almost social aspect. The idea is to provide everyone with access to a diverse offering and to concerts of national and international quality at affordable prices,” highlighted Guido Teles.
In addition to the paid-entry venue, the festivities feature three other free-access stages throughout the city, showcasing local bands and traditional groups.
