As of the start of this month, McDonald’s ketchup packets have become a paid item. A representative from McDonald’s Portugal confirmed that this measure applies to all restaurants nationwide, though prices may vary.
“To further reduce food waste and packaging use, starting April 1, each ketchup packet will come with a recommended sale price. However, we emphasize that McDonald’s franchisees are free to set their own prices,” the representative explained.
The recommended price is five cents per packet.
Addressing Waste?
McDonald’s Portugal detailed that since April 2023, only one ketchup packet is provided with each McMenu featuring fries, and only upon customer request.
“This measure aimed to prevent ketchup and packaging waste. While additional ketchup packets were provided at no extra charge upon request, we have observed significant ketchup wastage in McDonald’s restaurants. Any food given to the customer, even if unused, cannot be served again for food safety reasons,” the representative further explained.
This marks the first occasion in Portugal where McDonald’s is charging for ketchup, a product previously offered free to customers.
