Meals and more: Who is entitled to school social action and what it includes

The school social action program provides financial support to families with low incomes, ensuring that all students have access to compulsory education. This assistance is primarily aimed at students in the first and second tiers of family allowance.

Who is eligible for school social action?

DECO PROTeste states that “students residing in national territory attending public education, whose families fall within the defined maximum income thresholds” are eligible for the school social action program.

The organization outlines that the three social action brackets are determined according to the applicable family allowance scales:

  • Bracket A corresponds to the first family allowance tier, encompassing students whose household income does not exceed 3,564.82 euros annually.
  • Bracket B includes students from households earning between 3,564.82 euros and 7,129.64 euros annually.
  • Bracket C comprises students from households with annual incomes ranging from 7,129.64 euros to 12,120.39 euros.

These values apply to applications made in 2025, but it is the previous year’s income that determines the bracket. Refugee children and young people receive equivalent assistance to the first family allowance tier,” notes DECO PROTeste.

What does school social action include?

According to the consumer protection organization, “meals, transportation, books, school supplies, and field trips are included in the school social action.”

“Students from low-income families also have the right to economic assistance for expenses related to school attendance, including meals, school supplies, field trips, and accommodation. Beneficiaries are automatically exempt from fees and other costs, such as diplomas and certification certificates,” explains the organization.

Additionally, “Although enrollment or its renewal is the time to apply for support, if a family’s situation changes impacting the family allowance bracket, they can apply for school social action at any time. The school social action services provide the application form and indicate the necessary documentation.”

How to request support and the necessary requirements

To request access to school social action, “the guardian must submit the application during the enrollment or re-enrollment process.”

“This form is available at the school’s social action services. It must include a statement from Social Security indicating the family allowance amount, a document from the employment center confirming any guardian’s unemployment status for over three months, and the IBAN for payment,” explains DECO PROTeste.

If students are already registered on the SIGA platform, the application can be processed there under the ‘Applications/School Social Action [2025/2026]’ section.
