The legislation presented by the Government to the Assembly of the Republic, as it stands today, cannot receive the Socialist Party’s favorable vote. It is necessary for the Government to allow discussions on the matters at hand,” stated the new socialist leader following a meeting with the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, at the Belém Palace.
The PS Secretary-General noted that “some matters are more sensitive, others less so,” and the socialists believe “it is possible to improve certain aspects” of the executive’s legislation on nationality and foreigners, aimed at regulating immigration, which is set for debate in parliament on Friday.
“At present, there are dimensions of the ongoing legislation that, naturally, cannot count on the Socialist Party’s favorable vote,” said José Luís Carneiro.
