
The second edition of this initiative will feature debates, conversations, masterclasses, and sessions in the Pecha Kucha format (a concise presentation where the speaker shows 20 images, each for 20 seconds).
To collectively consider “the journalism we want,” a Media Fair will be held, featuring publications from various independent journalism projects, announced by the Goethe-Institut, which is organizing the meetings in partnership with media outlets such as 7Margens, CCA — Comunidade Cultura e Arte, Gerador, Médio Tejo, Mensagem de Lisboa, Projecto Inocência, RIA, Rimas & Batidas, and Shifter & LPP, in collaboration with Europa Criativa Portugal and the Friedrich Ebert Foundation in Portugal.
The MediaCon events will begin on the 10th at 10:00 AM with a masterclass by Joana Lobo Antunes on science communication, mainly aimed at journalists and journalism students.
At 11:30 AM, a discussion on research grants and support for journalism will follow, and at 2:00 PM, a masterclass on cross-border journalism will be presented by Paulo Pena from the international team of Investigate Europe.
At 5:00 PM, Joana Guerra Tadeu, Gonçalo Taborda, Patrícia Barnabé, and Catarina Carvalho will reflect on content creation and access to information.
At 7:00 PM, Marc Engelhardt, director of the collaborative journalism platform Correctiv (Switzerland), Vania Baldi, an Italian professor and researcher at Iscte, and Joana Gorjão Henriques, a journalist with the Portuguese daily Público, will discuss how technology has opened the stage to populism in journalism.
The following day, at the same hour, the conversation will focus on media literacy and fact-checking, gathering Alba Tobella (Verificat), Mariana Ochs (EducaMídia), Marta G. Franco (Laintersección), and Margarida Maneta (Lusófona University, CICANT).
“The state of cultural criticism in the current landscape” is the subject of the conversation scheduled for the 11th at 11:30 AM, featuring Cláudia Lucas Chéu, Filipa Vaz Teixeira, and José Teixeira.
The afternoon of the second day of meetings includes a masterclass and two discussions.
At 2:00 PM, Isabel Marques, information director of RIA – Rádio Universitária de Aveiro, will explain how a university radio newsroom operates.
At 3:00 PM, Pedro Jerónimo (LabCom), Nuno Francisco (Jornal do Fundão), and Patrícia Fonseca (MedioTejo) will reflect on regional journalism, followed by a 5:00 PM debate with photographers Bárbara Monteiro (Narrativa) and Vera Marmelo on the role of photography in storytelling.
With free admission (although some activities require prior registration), the MediaCon journalism meetings aim to promote reflection on the role of journalism in the current context and delve into specific subjects such as cultural criticism, cross-border journalism, or science communication.
