Medialivre reduces up to ten jobs in an area with “excess”

The Portuguese Journalists’ Union (SJ) announced today that it has learned of Medialivre’s intention to proceed with a “collective dismissal” targeting photojournalists. Medialivre is the owner of media outlets including Correio da Manhã, Record, Jornal de Negócios, and Sábado magazine. The union plans to challenge this action through all available means.

When asked to comment on these statements, an official source from Medialivre noted that “in recent months, the company has recruited over 100 new employees in various development areas.”

The source further stated that “in the interest of good management, we will reduce up to 10 positions in a specific area where the company has excess resources for its operations,” adding that “the company employs 730 workers.”

In a statement, SJ expressed surprise at this decision, which would reduce the workforce at Correio da Manhã, Record, Jornal de Negócios, and Sábado magazine. The union described the move as “unjustifiable,” particularly because it was announced on the eve of Labor Day.

SJ also criticized the manner in which the collective dismissal was communicated to employees, describing it as “a fait accompli, without any opportunity for dialogue, and with a hurried approach to dismiss these colleagues.” The notification was given to “at least ten workers—some while on duty, others on leave or vacation—in a rushed series of meetings convened at the last minute.”
