The justification of absences to the Medical Board can now be submitted online, announced the Institute of Social Security (ISS) on Monday.
“The justification of absences to the summons by the Disability Verification Services (Medical Board) can now be submitted online, through the Social Security Portal,” stated a note published on the ISS website.
With this new feature, “you can now submit your justification online, either before or after the date scheduled by the Medical Board, eliminating the need for an in-person visit.”
How to do it?
To justify an absence to the Medical Board via the Social Security Portal, follow these steps: Go to the main menu and select “Work.” > Choose the option “Disability Verification Service.” > Click on “Consult and manage medical verifications and justify absences.”
“This measure reflects Social Security’s ongoing commitment to digitization and improving public services provided to citizens,” adds the ISS.

What is a Medical Board?
The Medical Board is the “body responsible for assessing situations of disability and incapacity of users, issuing formal opinions and documents according to the objectives of each request.”
“The most common result of this evaluation is the Medical Certificate of Multiuse Disability (AMIM), but the request may have other legal objectives,” according to the SNS.

How does a medical board work?
According to the blog Salto, from Santander, the “process is relatively simple, but expect something quite formal.”
“First, you receive a summons (which should be sent in advance). Then, you are informed of the date, time, and location,” it reads.
On the day of the assessment, you will be examined by doctors who:
- Analyze the clinical documentation you bring (medical reports, exams, specialist opinions, additional exams performed, etc.)
- Ask questions about your medical and work history, symptoms, and limitations
- May conduct a physical evaluation to confirm your health status
- Discuss the case together and deliberate the degree of disability or aptitude to return to work.
“In the end, the opinion is recorded and sent to the entity that requested the medical board (Social Security, ADSE, Caixa Geral de Aposentações, insurers, or court),” it reads.

It should be noted that the validity of medical certificates of multiuse disability (AMIM) for social, economic, and tax benefits was extended until a new medical evaluation board is conducted, provided they are accompanied by proof of request for a medical evaluation board or, where applicable, for the corresponding re-evaluation, dated before the expiration date.
