Member of the Political Committee resigns from PAN: “Completely adrift”

“Yesterday, I decided to resign from PAN. The current PAN is a directionless party, completely adrift, whose only guiding light seems to be any position resembling power – anywhere, with anyone,” announced Carlos Macedo on social media.

Macedo was a member of the top organ between congresses, elected from the list opposing the spokesperson, Inês de Sousa Real, and had been a PAN member since mid-2011.

“After the incomprehensible agreement in 2023 with PSD and CDS in Madeira, this year PAN repeats the disaster by joining the coalition for the municipal elections in Faro with PSD, IL, and CDS. Yes, CDS, the CDS that gives everything for a bullfight. But, if in Faro the coalition is with PSD, CDS, and IL, in the neighboring municipality it is with Livre and BE. Such a lack of coherence,” he criticized.

From an internal point of view, according to Carlos Macedo, “everything is done to stifle freedom of opinion, with the so-called ‘gag law,’ while the Congress is successively postponed with flimsy excuses.”

“I couldn’t end without a word of gratitude to all the people who trusted us, with their votes – even to people from other parties. The fight does not stop. I will always be willing to fight for freedom,” he stated, after recalling the various responsibilities assumed in different electoral acts.

This marks the fifth resignation from the leadership bodies of the party led by Inês de Sousa Real since the legislative elections of May 18.

The last resignation was known on May 26, when Carolina Pia, the head of the PAN list for Viseu in the 2024 legislative elections, resigned from the National Political Commission due to disagreements with the leadership.

Anabela Castro and Nuno Pires announced their departure from the same body on election day, and Pedro Fidalgo Marques announced on May 24 his departure from the permanent political commission, while remaining on the National Political Commission.

On May 23, when only the first two resignations were known, the PAN spokesperson stated that she has led the party with openness, ensuring to have a “more than peaceful conscience” and refusing to engage in what she considers “false and unfounded” narratives about her leadership.
