MEP Paulo Cunha will be the rapporteur of the AI convention

In an announcement, the European Parliament delegation of the PSD stated that Paulo Cunha, who leads the social-democratic delegation at the European institution, will be the rapporteur for the Convention on Artificial Intelligence and Human Rights, Democracy, and the Rule of Law.

This convention, the party explained, is the “first international legal instrument” aimed at regulating the use of Artificial Intelligence to ensure this technology fully respects “human rights.”

The aim is to establish a “common framework” to unite the development of this technology with “ethical responsibility,” the statement indicated.

The social-democratic MEP, quoted in the statement, expressed that the goal is to ensure that “Artificial Intelligence serves people and not the other way around.”

From the MEP’s perspective, the European Union seeks to demonstrate that it is “possible to lead the digital future without compromising fundamental values.”

There are already examples of the usage of generative Artificial Intelligence to distort statements from authorities and government officials and even for the creation of criminal content.

The European Union, the United States, Japan, and Canada are among the signatories of this convention.
