Mercadona continues its expansion in Portugal with the opening of a new supermarket in Porto on Thursday, located at Rua Nova do Tronco nº 125, in Amial.
“The new store has created 65 stable and high-quality jobs, reinforcing Mercadona’s commitment to local economic development and job creation,” reads a statement accessed by Notícias ao Minuto.
The supermarket group recalls that it “opened the first store in the city of Porto in 2019, at Domingos Sequeira Street, followed by the Campanhã store and the Diogo Botelho street store.”
“Thus, from today, with the opening of the Amial store, the chain has four supermarkets in the city of Porto, which represent an investment of 32 million euros and more than 260 jobs in the municipality, all with permanent contracts and attractive salary conditions,” the statement continues.
According to Mercadona, the “opening was attended by Catarina Araújo of the Porto City Council, accompanied by the municipal executive, and the President of the Parish of Paranhos, Miguel Seabra, who conducted an institutional visit to the new supermarket’s facilities.”
Features of the Mercadona Store
The Spanish group states that “this supermarket has a sales area of 1,900 m² and offers 152 parking spaces, including two dedicated to electric vehicle charging, in line with the company’s commitment to electric mobility.”
“Additionally, for greater convenience, customers can also find a parking area for scooters and bicycles. This store also features 416 solar panels. By generating renewable photovoltaic energy on the store’s rooftops for self-consumption, the company improves environmental performance and saves about 20% on electricity annually,” it states.
The company further notes that “whenever a new supermarket is opened, Mercadona implements its Corporate Social Responsibility Policy through food donations, one of the main measures against food waste and part of its commitment to share with the society a portion of what it receives.”
“Thus, this supermarket will donate essential goods daily, from the first day, to the Social Center of the Parish of Senhora da Conceição, a local social solidarity institution with which Mercadona has signed a collaboration protocol,” it adds.
Moreover, “in Portugal, during the year 2024, the company donated 1,300 tons of food, equivalent to 22,760 shopping carts of essential goods, collaborating with 80 social entities.”
Expansion Plan in Portugal
Mercadona explains that its long-term investment in Portugal “includes an ongoing expansion plan for six years, reflected in more than 1.1 billion euros already invested, made possible by its Portuguese team of over 7,000 employees in permanent positions.”
“Mercadona remains committed to strengthening relationships and directly contributing to the growth of national suppliers that make up its network, from which it purchased 4.5 billion euros between 2019 and 2024. This value, which will continue to grow with the opening of new stores, reflects the creation of wealth in the country and generates value for the entire agri-food chain,” the statement concludes.
