Mercadona opened another supermarket today. “Created 90 new jobs”

The Spanish retail group Mercadona is set to open a new supermarket in Palmela, Setúbal district, this Thursday, creating 90 new jobs, the company announced in a statement.

“Today, Mercadona opens a new supermarket in the municipality of Palmela, located on Rua de São Julião. The new store, the sixth in the Setúbal district, has generated approximately 90 stable and quality jobs, reinforcing Mercadona’s commitment to local economic development and job creation,” the announcement states.

Overall, the group explains, “the company employs over 500 individuals in the Setúbal district, all on permanent contracts with attractive salary conditions.”

In a project involving the upgrading of road infrastructure and access improvements, including enhancements to the sewage network, electrical infrastructure, public lighting, pedestrian paths, and repaving of Rua de São Julião, Mercadona’s project in Palmela has also resulted in the establishment of green areas adjacent to the public road, contributing to the revitalization of the surrounding area, the Spanish brand highlights.

The opening was attended by Palmela’s Mayor Álvaro Balseiro Amaro and the President of Palmela Parish Council, Jorge Mares, along with their respective teams, who conducted an official visit to the new supermarket facilities.

Palmela’s Mayor, Álvaro Balseiro Amaro, noted in the statement, “In this market economy, the importance of diversifying the available offer to consumers is undeniable. This area of Palmela, which already comprises a considerable range of commerce and services, has become a new centrality. We now welcome Mercadona, which brings, in addition to a wider array of products, new employment opportunities for the local population and a strong commitment to social responsibility, which we hope will bear good fruit.”

In the context of this opening, Sofia Fonseca, Director of External Relations for Central and Southern Portugal, also mentioned in the statement: “We are very pleased with our arrival in Palmela, fulfilling our objective of being increasingly closer to our ‘Chefes’ (customers), to offer them quality service and a distinctive shopping experience. We invite Palmela residents to visit us, and we hope they will find in Mercadona their trusted supermarket.”

“For greater convenience during shopping, each store is equipped with ergonomic, coin-free shopping carts and wide aisles between sections. All supermarkets feature a Butcher’s, Fish Market, Delicatessen with hand-cut ham, Bakery and Pastry Shop, Fruits and Vegetables section with a freshly squeezed orange juice machine, Perfumery, Home Care, and Pet Care. Additionally, there is a Drinks Section with a wide selection of Portuguese wines, and a Ready-to-Eat area with a self-service option, offering traditional dishes like duck rice, for consumption at home or in the store’s seating area,” Mercadona explains.
