According to the union structure, about 60 workers are involved, performing the same functions but spread across four different careers, resulting in varying salaries and disparate career progression prospects.
Orlando Almeida, a leader of FNSTFPS, stated to Lusa on Monday that “nothing has been done” by those responsible to change the situation and properly integrate all workers into the senior technical career.
The leader mentioned that the 24-hour strike might impact the meteorological information service provided to airports and airfields.
When contacted by Lusa, the Ministry of Agriculture and the Sea, which oversees the IPMA, indicated that it is “coordinating efforts” with the Ministry of Finance “to resolve this situation.”
“At stake is the process of consolidating the inter-career mobility of the IPMA meteorological observers, a workers’ aspiration dating back to 2017, which the current Government intends to address,” stated the Ministry of Agriculture and the Sea.
