During this holiday season and the warmer months, keeping informed of the news becomes essential for a safe summer. The National Health Service (SNS) emphasized on social media this Friday the importance of staying updated through official channels on topics such as weather, air and water quality, and fire alerts. A “well-informed summer is a safe summer,” they noted.
The SNS reminded the public that “summer can be enjoyed responsibly and safely,” highlighting six websites that Portuguese citizens should keep at hand: “Discover where to find essential information for your health and safety this summer,” it stated.
For weather updates, it is crucial to refer to the Instituto Português do Mar e da Atmosfera (IPMA), where one can “follow meteorological alerts and the current UV Index.”
For air quality information, citizens should turn to the QUALAR, where the “Portuguese Environment Agency (APA) provides air quality information.”
What about water?
When it comes to water, and particularly its quality at any given time, the National Health Service recommends two essential sites: infoÁgua and GelAvista.
At the first site, one can check “the characteristics, flags, and water quality of the beaches,” while GelAvista allows users to “consult and collaborate” with the program of the same name to “inform and stay informed about jellyfish.”
Real-time fire alerts? Two websites to use
To obtain comprehensive information about fires, two websites should be accessed. These are the National Civil Protection Authority (ANEPC), where one can “track alerts and fire risk,” and fogos.pt, which allows users to “monitor fires in real-time.”

The Government extended the nation’s alert status until Wednesday (August 13) due to forest fire risks.
This alert status is justified by two main reasons: the continuation of high temperatures expected nationwide over the next few days and the reduced number of ignitions due to imposed prohibitions.

Following the Council of Ministers, the Executive announced that the country’s alert situation has been prolonged for a week, due to meteorological conditions among other factors. The immigration law was also a topic of discussion, with the Minister of the Presidency addressing the President of the Republic’s statements.
