The concession agreement for the Porto Metropolitan Area Light Rail System has been extended by three months, with the new expiration set for June 2025. This extension is specified in an official addendum to the contract.
The estimated cost of this addendum is 10,936,688.07 euros, excluding VAT. Consequently, the overall price of the subcontract, which commenced in 2018, has increased from the previously anticipated 204.3 million euros to 215.3 million euros.
This expenditure was outlined in Ministerial Order 176/2025/2, published in the Official Gazette on March 5.
The current subcontract was initially scheduled to terminate this month.
Last October, the Technical Unit for Project Monitoring (UTAP) of the Ministry of Finance assembled a project team to develop a new subcontract for Porto’s metro system.
The project team’s mandate involves conducting studies and preparing a new partnership for the operation and maintenance subcontract of the metro system in the Porto Metropolitan Area, according to the official summary document.
The current subcontract, awarded to ViaPorto, part of the Barraqueiro Group, began in 2018 and follows a public-private partnership (PPP) model.
Currently, Metro do Porto operates six lines and 85 stations across Porto, Vila Nova de Gaia, Matosinhos, Maia, Gondomar, Vila do Conde, and Póvoa de Varzim. Under construction are the Rosa Line (G) between São Bento and Casa da Música (Porto) and the Rubi Line (H) between Santo Ovídio (Vila Nova de Gaia) and Casa da Música (Porto).
