In a statement, Metro do Porto announced that the construction of an underpass at the Gaia-Devesas station, part of the Ruby Line project, will lead to rail traffic restrictions between Porto-Campanhã and Aveiro, primarily during nighttime and weekends, “to minimize the impact on passengers.”
“To ensure service and reduce the inconvenience caused by these restrictions,” Metro do Porto will provide “road transfers for CP passengers, with stops at the following railway stations: Porto-São Bento, Porto-Campanhã, General Torres, Gaia-Devesas, Coimbrões, Madalena, Valadares, Francelos, Miramar, Aguda, Granja, Espinho, Ovar, and Aveiro (for long-distance services),” the statement added.
Thus, on weekends starting Saturday and continuing until August 10, as well as from September 20 to 28, there will be rail traffic restrictions from 11:50 PM to 7:50 AM.
On weekends from August 17 to 31 and from October 5 to December 2, the restrictions will occur between 10:00 PM and 10:00 AM.
On weekdays, from August 11 to September 25 (including the holiday on August 15) and from November 26 to December 12 (including the holidays on December 1 and 8), the works will necessitate rail traffic restrictions on that section between 11:00 PM and 5:00 AM.
The commencement of the underpass construction at Gaia-Devesas station, which necessitates these restrictions, was coordinated with Infraestruturas de Portugal and CP – Comboios de Portugal, assured Metro do Porto.
The Ruby Line, measuring 6.4 kilometers with eight stations, includes a new crossing over the Douro, the D. Antónia Ferreira bridge, exclusively reserved for metro, pedestrian, and bicycle traffic.
In Gaia, the planned stations for the Ruby Line are Santo Ovídio, Soares dos Reis, Devesas, Rotunda, Candal, and Arrábida, and in Porto, Campo Alegre and Casa da Música.
The project must be completed by the end of 2026, but a source from Metro do Porto has already admitted to Lusa that the bridge is likely to be completed only in 2027, primarily due to finishing touches.
Originally, the project was estimated to cost 435 million euros. On April 16, the transport company’s president acknowledged that the total cost of the Ruby Line, currently under construction between Casa da Música and Santo Ovídio, will rise by 50 million euros, and the price may increase further.
