Mexico will host the APEC 2028 summit. “Bridge between the Americas and Asia”

“Mexico will be the host of the APEC after many years. This will allow us to be a bridge between the Americas and Asia. The entire Pacific basin will be in Mexico in 2028,” revealed Mexico’s Secretary of Economy, Marcelo Ebrard, in a statement cited today.

This announcement marks Mexico’s return as the summit’s host after over two decades. APEC comprises 21 economies from Asia and the Pacific, including China and the United States, which together account for more than 60% of global GDP and about half of global trade.

“The fact that they voted for Mexico as the host in 2028 demonstrates the importance they attribute to our country,” added Ebrard, who highlighted international recognition of the government under President Claudia Sheinbaum.

“It is a great acknowledgment of President Claudia Sheinbaum’s work, the way she is handling her relationship with the United States, the successes, the advances achieved with her Mexico Plan, and the figure she represents,” emphasized the Mexican official.

During his stay in South Korea, Ebrard held bilateral meetings with high-ranking U.S. government officials, including Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent, as well as Trade Representative Jamieson Greer.

“We have advanced some discussions with the United States. We are on the right track,” stated the Secretary of Economy, explaining that both parties are working on resolving trade issues with a view to the revision of the Mexico-United States-Canada Agreement (T-MEC), expected next year.

“We had a good conversation about how we will move forward in the coming weeks […] very likely in the coming days we will meet again in Washington,” Ebrard indicated.
