“No party will benefit from this conflict. Neither the involved nor outsiders. We are facing a world that demands careful attention. This should be a concern for the future,” stated Gouveia e Melo during a visit to the Feira do Campo Alentejano in Aljustrel, Beja district.
The retired admiral expressed concern over the escalating conflict, describing it as “no longer a small military operation,” but rather “a war in the Middle East that could once more endanger international stability.”
“At this stage, there are not many solutions [to the war]. Both parties believe they are right, they will fight, destroy property and human lives, and once again, humans have not chosen dialogue,” he lamented.
The presidential candidate acknowledged that “Israel is in a difficult position, as Iran aims to destroy the State of Israel.”
“This ultimately amounts to an annihilation proposal,” commented Gouveia e Melo, noting that it is “challenging for the State of Israel to face this constant threat and see it potentially grow into a nuclear threat.”
“However, I am saddened to witness another international conflict unfolding. A conflict that will also impact our lives through various factors, one being the price of oil,” he remarked.
Israel and Iran have been at war since Friday morning when Tel Aviv bombed Iranian military and nuclear facilities, resulting in at least 78 deaths, including military leaders and scientists, and hundreds injured, according to Iranian diplomacy.
The Israeli attacks, conducted by 200 aircraft targeting a hundred sites, primarily hit Tehran (north) and the Natanz uranium enrichment plant (center).
Iran retaliated by launching hundreds of missiles into Israeli territory, with explosions reported in the cities of Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, killing at least three people and injuring dozens.
