Miguel Prata Roque out of the electoral race for the leadership of the PS

The direct elections scheduled for June 27 and 28 aim solely to choose someone to complete the current secretary-general’s term, which would have ended in January 2026, as stated in a communication sent by Miguel Prata Roque.

According to the socialist, the PS National Commission did not schedule the National Congress for the discussion of a global political motion and election of national bodies nor for the election of delegates to the National Congress.

“The sole concern of Semear Esperança is to ensure renewal takes place. That things change. In the absence of a deep, plural, and clarifying debate on the future strategy to adopt, the Semear Esperança movement will not present a candidate for the Direct Elections of June 27 and 28,” he justified.

However, Miguel Prata Roque anticipates that “in due course” and “at the end of the current mandate of the PS national bodies,” his movement will “assess the effectiveness and the degree of execution of this future agenda.”

“There is a new generation of future that needs room to breathe. The Semear Esperança movement believes it is up to the Socialist Party to open those doors and windows,” the communiqué begins.

The former official argues for creating a Governmental Innovation Laboratory to “debate and develop a Future Agenda, allowing the PS to return to government in 2029” and to hold a Future Summit discussing this agenda during 2027-2028.

“Open the PS to the participation of independent people and the most innovative social and business experiences,” he advocated.

According to Prata Roque, his movement shared this agenda with the announced candidate for PS secretary-general José Luís Carneiro—currently the sole contender—who “conveyed to the Semear Esperança movement that he shares the concern of opening the PS to the outside and a new way of doing politics.”

“And that he is willing to embrace these (or some of these) proposals if elected,” he added.
