Miguel Sousa Tavares on labor law: “Government proceeded recklessly”

Miguel Sousa Tavares commented on Thursday night on CNN Portugal regarding the changes to labor laws and the general strike scheduled for December 11.

According to the commentator, the issue arose because the Government proceeded independently with a labor package without prior negotiations with unions and employers.

“I understand the Government’s intention to change a structure of labor law designed for an economy that increasingly exists less. What I don’t understand is the Government deciding to present a proposal without prior discussion with unions and employers, with social partners – if there is a matter of social dialogue and discussion at the level of social consultation, it is this,” he stated.

Sousa Tavares remarked that “the Government went ahead recklessly with a proposal it obviously had already prepared,” so it cannot be “very surprised” when unions say, “we won’t play like this, we’re going for a general strike.”

Cartazes de André Ventura são “crime ético, político, assalto à verdade”

Regarding the controversial posters of the leader of Chega in his candidacy for the Presidency of the Republic, Miguel Sousa Tavares is unequivocal that they are “an ethical, political crime, an assault on truth.”

“André Ventura must not know anything about what is happening in the country to say that immigrants live on subsidies. He doesn’t see the ‘types’ of Uber, morning to night, in the city, back and forth, delivering food to people’s homes – and the ones from Glovo and all that,” the writer remarked.

Relating this matter to the labor law reform, Miguel Sousa Tavares accuses André Ventura of being deceptive, claiming Chega has been one of those contributing most to labor reform.

“Claiming that immigrants should leave because, he says, if they leave, others will start earning better […]. This is false in three ways: one, the work that immigrants do is not what the Portuguese want to do; second, we are living in a situation of almost full employment – so there is no one out of the labor market due to immigrants and earning less; third, last year salaries in Portugal increased by an average of 7.5%,” stated the commentator.
