Minister announces an additional 8% for Science in the State Budget of 2026

During his speech at the 50th-anniversary ceremony of the Engineering School of the University of Minho, located at the Azurém campus in Guimarães, Braga district, Fernando Alexandre announced an 8% increase in the upcoming budget for science.

When questioned later by journalists about this announcement, the minister reiterated this figure, indicating an additional 40 million euros.

“It means an extra 40 million [euros] compared to the 2025 budget,” emphasized the minister, adding that the next State Budget “will be presented in eight days,” when all the numbers will be revealed.

The minister was also asked whether this budget increase would appease some critical voices regarding the existing doubts about funding for science or research.

“In 2024, this Government has already demonstrated, with the highest implementation ever in the field of science, we will reinforce in 2025 and further reinforce in 2026. This Government understands that more investment in education, more investment in science, can lead to a better society and a more competitive economy,” replied Fernando Alexandre.
