The Portuguese Minister of Agriculture has urged caution against complacency during a visit to the Ovibeja agricultural fair, emphasizing the importance of maintaining momentum with agricultural applications. Speaking to the press at the event’s opening, he highlighted the ongoing nature of the applications under the Unified Request, which cover direct payments, associated supports, eco-regimes, rural development, Natura 2000 payments, maintenance of agricultural activities in disadvantaged areas, and forestry measures.
In response to inquiries about the recent decision by the Institute for the Financing of Agriculture and Fisheries (IFAP) to extend the deadline for PE2025 applications from May 15 to May 26, the minister stressed that he hoped this extension would not lead to a relaxation of efforts. He expressed concern over potential last-minute requests for further extensions due to technical issues.
Minister José Manuel Fernandes acknowledged the substantial workload faced by agricultural confederations and technical staff involved in these processes but emphasized the need for expediting the objectives. He noted that despite the energy blackout on Monday, over 1,100 applications were still submitted.
Addressing an audience at a colloquium organized by the Association of Young Farmers of Portugal (AJAP), the minister highlighted the broader implications of agricultural support, describing it as support not just for farmers, but for citizens at large. He explained the role of these supports in enabling farmers to compete under stringent European environmental and safety regulations and to offer products at consumer-friendly prices. He noted that without such support, food costs could significantly increase or require reliance on imports.
Even with these supports, the minister acknowledged that farmers often earn less than professionals in other fields, which he said underscores the importance of maintaining European standards for environmentally compliant and affordable food production.
The IFAP has also clarified that while the application period for the PU2025 has been extended until May 26 without penalty, late submissions will be accepted until June 1, subject to a 1% daily penalty. More than a thousand exhibitors are participating in the 41st Ovibeja fair, organized by the ACOS – Southern Farmers’ Association, which runs until Sunday.
