Minister of Culture praises the “legacy” of writer Teresa Rita Lopes

The Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, Margarida Balseiro Lopes, highlighted the “invaluable legacy” of writer Teresa Rita Lopes, “one of the great figures of contemporary Portuguese literature and culture,” who passed away on Saturday at the age of 87.

“Writer, essayist, playwright, and recognized specialist in the work of Fernando Pessoa, she leaves us with an invaluable legacy of dedication to the Portuguese language, critical thinking, and literary creation. At this time of mourning, I pay tribute to her life and work, which will continue to inspire generations. To her family, friends, and the academic and artistic community, I extend my deepest condolences,” Balseiro Lopes wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

Poet, playwright, and researcher Teresa Rita Lopes, one of the foremost experts on the work of Fernando Pessoa, died on Saturday in the municipality of Almada, aged 87.

Born in Faro on September 12, 1937, Teresa Rita Lopes was one of the most dedicated researchers in Pessoa studies and also authored poetry, short stories, and plays, having won several awards throughout her career, according to biographical data from the Presença website.

The author’s wake is scheduled for 3:30 PM this Monday at the Church of Our Lady of Fátima, in Feijó, with the funeral set to leave on Tuesday at 1:00 PM for cremation at Vale Flores Cemetery in the same locality of the municipality of Almada.
