The Minister of Youth and Modernization said today that the Portuguese government is committed to defending human rights and admitted that there is anti-LGBTI+ discrimination.
Responding at a parliamentary hearing to Chega MP Rita Matias, who accused her of being the “Trojan horse for this government’s ‘woke’ agenda”, Margarida Balseiro Lopes said that the executive is concerned about discrimination in Portugal.
“This government, not just myself, is absolutely committed to defending human rights and the rights of LGBTI people,” she said.
“These are human rights and, yes, there is discrimination in Portugal,” she replied.
At a hearing of the Budget, Finance and Public Administration Committee almost entirely dedicated to modernization, the Chega MP challenged the fact that the minister, who holds the Equality portfolio, had marked International LGBTI+ Pride Day and had met with Brazil’s Minister of Racial Equality.
“Are you going to embrace all these little agendas of racism, discrimination, sexual orientation, radical feminism, because this is your role as a pivot in the government?” she asked. — she asked.
“I am committed to fighting all forms of discrimination,” replied Margarida Balseiro Lopes.
