Minister says financial literacy consolidates the discipline of Citizenship

The Minister of Education, Science, and Innovation visited a school in Lisbon this morning for an initiative on Savings Day.

When asked by journalists about the recent issues caused by the Chega party’s posters, which have sparked controversy with messages related to immigrants from Bangladesh and Roma citizens, Fernando Alexandre responded that these are topics already included in the Citizenship and Development curriculum.

“We will have [the topics on racism] within the dimension of Human Rights, which is a mandatory area in all school years. This initiative we are conducting today on Financial Literacy and Entrepreneurship will be expanded to other areas, to other dimensions of the Citizenship and Development curriculum,” he added.

Fernando Alexandre emphasized that the issue of racism is a cause for concern and is therefore addressed in the Citizenship subject, which he insisted is “mandatory.”

Today, to mark Savings Day, schools across the country are hosting initiatives on financial literacy with the participation of government members, academics, and institution leaders.

The Finance Minister, Joaquim Miranda Sarmento, conducted a class for 150 11th-grade students at José Gomes Ferreira School in Lisbon, and the Governor of the Bank of Portugal will be present at a secondary school in Coimbra.

Fernando Alexandre recalled that training in the area of financial literacy and entrepreneurship is mandatory within the Citizenship and Development subject, which he noted “was an unstructured subject in many schools” in the country.
