Ministry “deeply regrets” accident at Alcochete Firing Range

The Ministry of National Defense has expressed deep sorrow over a workplace accident at the shooting range in Samora Correia, which resulted in the death of one worker and left another seriously injured, according to a statement on the ministry’s official account on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter).

The ministry, overseen by centrist Nuno Melo, extended “heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the victim of this accident” and wished “a swift recovery to the injured worker.”

The Air Force has announced the launch of an “investigation process” to determine the causes of the accident.

In a press release from this branch of the Armed Forces, it was reported that today around 1:00 p.m., “a workplace accident occurred at the shooting range in Samora Correia, resulting in one fatality and one serious injury.”

“The workers, employed by a private company contracted by the Air Force for forest management activities at the shooting range, were engaged in cutting stone pine outside the shooting lanes,” the statement elaborates.

The Air Force, “in coordination with the relevant authorities,” stated that they are “determining the causes of the accident” and have “immediately initiated an investigation process.”

A Civil Protection source informed Lusa that the accident likely occurred following the “detonation of an explosive device,” with the alarm raised at 1:45 p.m.

The military branch reported that the accident was communicated to the Air Force by the company and that “emergency services were immediately deployed, with INEM units currently on site.”

“The Air Force extends its deepest condolences to the family, friends, and acquaintances of the victim of this accident and wishes a speedy recovery to the injured worker,” reads the statement.
